Handbook of best practice and standards for 3D imaging of Natural History specimens

Scope of the Handbook
The scope of this handbook is to present the different digitization techniques currently in use in European institutions. By presenting these techniques we aim to provide a guideline for other starting digitization initiatives by showing, which techniques can be used for a certain collection or specimen. In this handbook of best practice one will find, besides the general information of a certain technique, a thorough workflow, an equipment list and a test case per institution on how to create a good digital replica of a specimen.

Summary and key recommendations

DNA barcoding involves the standardised use of DNA sequences to tell species apart. This report explores the feasibility and strategic use of natural history collections for DNA barcoding and wider genomic approaches for discriminating among species. The report is based on discussions at the International Barcode of Life Conference in Guelph, Canada (August 2015) and a workshop at the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh, UK (September 2015), supported by further dialogue and literature surveys.

Framework and Background

In SYNTHESYS3 Networking Activity 2 (NA2) Objective 2.1 it was set to produce a best practice handbook for 3D imaging. With this handbook as a guideline it would be possible for any institution to create 3D models of their collection.
